The US is rolling out an aggressive military expansionist strategy in the Pacific to instigate conflict and expand its control and domination of the region via its Indo-Pacific strategy and Pivot to Asia. The US Indo Pacific strategy includes expanding military bases, the bloating of the defense budget, rolling out of US-Korea-Japan Trilateral, AUKUS, QUAD and other military agreements. The US created the indo pacific strategy itself to encircle China as a result of inter-imperialist competition over the Asia Pacific region. US posturing and military aggression and encirclement of China, provision of military aid, and threatening statements re: the defense of Taiwan, as well as regular US military exercises and drills in the region show intense provocation in the rivalry with China. This military rivalry and build up to war, foreshadowing a potentially deadly confrontation in the Asia-Pacific. Rising tensions between and among rival superpowers, compounded with the presence of multilateral military alliances, ensure that if there is war, it will be more devastating for the people and the environment. Ultimately, it is the people, not their governments, who endure the worsening deterioration of human rights because of these military expansionist activities.
The Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercises are the largest joint war exercises in the world, conducted biannually in Hawai'i. These exercises are launched out of San Diego, where nearly 1/3 of the Pacific Navy fleet launches from. The US uses RIMPAC to strengthen the abilities of 26 of its allies’ militaries to wage wars of aggression around the world, as threats of war between major military powers continue to rise. Through weapons testing and war-making, defense contractors and fossil fuel corporations reap hundreds of millions of dollars in profits. Meanwhile, our tax dollars are spent on war and occupation instead of on basic housing, food, employment and healthcare needs of our communities. The US military occupation of Hawai'i is a violation of native Hawaiian sovereignty and turns Hawai'i into a place where “future wars are in development.” RIMPAC leads to environmental destruction, violence against women, and a gross neglect of the day to day needs of people all over the world by advancing US-led wars. Its in this context that the Resist US-Led War Movement, the International Women’s Alliance and BAYAN USA (Bagong Alyansang Makabayan) have united to launch a campaign against RIMPAC. We see the growing need for anti-war movements, womens grassroots struggles and national liberation movements like that in the Philippines to come together to oppose blatant US military aggression. We want to build up support and solidarity with the Hawai’I based campaign against RIMPAC that has been waged for decades and show that the issue of militarization on the Hawaiian islands can also be opposed from our actions on the Continent and within the 26 countries that participate in RIMPAC to unite an even broader movement to call to cancel RIMPAC and resist wars of aggression. |
