The Resist US-Led War Movement condemns the US’s escalating acts of aggression against Iran and Iraq. The assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force, and Iraqi Militia Commander Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis carried out on Iraqi soil both violates international law and violates the sovereignty of Iraq. This dangerously escalates US war-mongering and is marching the US to the brink of open war with Iran.
We reject Trump and the Pentagon’s blatant lies that the assassination was carried out to prevent violence and protect American interests. This hostile unilateral act was carried out to protect and advance U.S. imperialist interests aimed at dominating the region -- including controlling its massive oil reserves. This act was intended to quell the resistance of the people in the region, standing up for their sovereignty and self-determination. The U.S. imperialists represent the interests of the 1% ruling elite of war profiteers and do not represent the majority of the American people, and most certainly not the Iraqi or Iranian people.
U.S. war will kill more Iranians, after years of suffocating sanctions on Iran have already murdered countless civilians. U.S. war will bring more suffering to people in Iraq and the broader region, who have already borne the brunt of violence, famine, destruction of resources, poverty and disease wrought by U.S. militarization, having lost over 2 million people since the 2003 invasion. U.S. war will further inflame tensions among the U.S., Russia and China, competing for power and control in the region.
At a time when the U.S. is drawing and crossing more lines, we must build an international anti-war movement that connects dots and builds solidarity among people opposing imperialist aggression. This dire situation must drive us to build stronger resistance to prevent further escalation now, prevent large scale war in the future, and end ongoing U.S. war, occupation, counterinsurgency operations, sanctions, overseas military bases, and intervention immediately. We urge everyone to join the January 25 global day action, mount your own protest actions in the streets, and echo the calls of people throughout the world for:
No War, No Sanctions on Iran
Stand for the Sovereignty of Iraq
U.S. Out of Iraq and Everywhere
End U.S. War, Militarism and Imperialism
